Ed Kashi: The Art of Visual Storytelling
This four and a half day workshop will allow you to share your work in an intimate session and learn about the many new ways we can create photographs, tell visual stories, work with mobile photography and develop your personal style and approach as it applies to documentary work. And for those professionals who want to grow and develop your work to a new level, for publication online and in books, exhibitions and websites, this workshop will propel that change.
With photography changing so dramatically, there has never been a greater need for the photographer to be able to put a personal stamp, or authorship, on their work. There will be an emphasis on helping students develop their personal vision and unique styles.
As with most of Ed Kashi’s work, the ultimate goal is to learn how to find a subject you are passionate about and document it in a compelling visual style. Ed Kashi will use as examples his many personal projects, and we will look at photographs, multimedia and short films to consider the range of opportunities out there at the moment. Students will have 3 days of shooting and review sessions, plus a day dedicated to putting your work together for a group critique of each student’s portfolio/essays during the workshop.

WHO THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR
Any photographer who wants to hone their visual storytelling skills. The four and a half day workshop format offers the chance to work at an intensity and depth that are often hard to manage with the distractions of daily life and work.
WHAT THIS WORKSHOP IS
An opportunity to work with a renowned teacher and photographer. The participants in this workshop will come away with a greater understanding of not only how to improve their photographs but will also be inspired to find new ways to personalize their approach to bring greater meaning to their work and the experience of doing photography.
WHAT THIS WORKSHOP IS NOT
A technical, lighting or studio workshop. The emphasis will be on non-commercial location photography in the editorial, documentary style. There will be no instruction on the use of your camera or its features or in the basic use of your chosen editing program. You should be comfortable with your camera’s operation and familiar enough with your editing software to allow import, selection and export of your images. If you need some technical preparation or a refresher then please take the DCP DSLR Evening Classes, Beginner Full Day Workshop, Lightroom classes or equivalent training.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Energy, curiosity and a willingness to openly share your creativity and images with the others in the group. Gear-wise you’ll need your camera equipment, laptop and editing software. There are no minimum requirements for camera style or model.

Day 1- Doors open at 6:15pm and we will start at 6:30pm to review instructor’s work and class introductions, going over our personal history and goals in life and with our photography. We’ll view each student’s work. Goals of the workshop are to either produce a new story or develop further an ongoing project.
Day 2- Shoot in the morning and afternoon, concentrating on landscapes and environmental portraits. Then return to the classroom from 10am to 3pm to download and edit the day’s work and have discussions on composition, editing and narrative development.
Day 3- Shoot in the morning and afternoon, concentrating on the candid moment. Then return to the classroom from 10am to 3pm to download and edit the day’s work and have discussions on your progress in your project. We will also discuss multimedia and its role in visual storytelling today.
Day 4- Shoot in the morning and afternoon, concentrating on completing your story. Then return to classroom from 10am to 3pm to download and edit the day’s work and have discussions on your progress in your project.
Day 5- Spend the whole day in the classroom editing the week’s work to prepare a final edit of 10-15 images to be shared in a group critique in the afternoon, where we will go over sequencing in a group session to prepare our final show.

This workshop is for advanced amateurs and professionals who are serious and passionate about their photography. In order to maintain a minimum level of aesthetic and technical proficiency in the group, each applicant is required to submit a portfolio for review. This is not a commercial portfolio review and you by no means need to be a professional to apply. We are interested in your personal, creative work. The photos can be taken with any type of camera. Either before or after registering for the workshop, submit 10 images according to these guidelines:
• Images must be JPEG, minimum 2000 pixels on the long side
• Filenames must contain your first and last name
• Submit via WeTransfer. You don’t need an account or any login information, just add your files. Enter our email address DCPSUBMISSIONS@GMAIL.COM and enter your return email address. Hit Transfer and you’re all set!
Portfolios are due within 14 days of the date you registered or 30 days before the workshop beginning date – whichever comes first. If you register within 30 days we will need your portfolio within one day of your registration.
Your space in the workshop is not guaranteed until you are registered and the DCP staff has reviewed your portfolio. If we feel that this workshop is not a good fit, we will provide a full refund of all payments received to date.
There are no specific camera requirement for this workshop. You can work with anything from a DSLR system to an iPhone or pocket camera. Film would be acceptable only if you have a way to process and scan each day’s photos and bring them in to be viewed electronically.
A laptop is required for importing, selecting, editing and exporting files each day. You can use any software including Lightroom, iPhoto or others as long as you know your way around the software.

The discounted early registration price is good until 28 days before the workshop begins. We must have a minimum of 10 participants by the early registration deadline for the workshop to make.
A $300 deposit is required to hold your seat. You’ll receive an email with a direct link to the payment page for the balance of $675 which must be received no later than 28 days before the workshop. Balance payments after that date will be based on the late registration fee. Please also see portfolio review details below.
CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS
If you cancel more than 45 days before the workshop begins then we’ll refund any payments made less a $150 processing fee. If you cancel from 31 to 45 days before the start date of the workshop we will refund all money received to date minus a $300 cancellation penalty. If you cancel less than 30 days before the start date of the workshop you will forfeit 100% of the total workshop fee. If you can’t attend you are welcome to send someone in your place. In some cases we may be able to find a replacement for your empty seat if the workshop is already sold out in which case you will receive a partial refund minus the $300 cancellation fee.
Dallas Center for Photography reserves the right to cancel a workshop at any time for low enrollment or for other reasons and will promptly refund all payments made to date. In the event of a workshop cancellation, DCP and Spot Studio, Inc. are not responsible for reimbursement of non-refundable airline tickets, hotel reservations and other travel arrangements. If you’re coming from out of town we recommend that you purchase travel insurance.
