If you’ve ever fumbled with gear and accessories on a shoot, this is the class for you. This introductory workshop is geared towards both filmmakers and photographers who want to get a better grasp of gripping on a set. You’ll learn hands-on techniques about lighting support, grip accessories, on-set best practices and safety. 

Led by local Gaffer and Cinematographer David Lynn, we will be working at the Electric Light and Power Company rental house, right next door to DCP. It includes a tour of the ELP facility with a complete range of lighting and grip equipment as well as a tour of their camera rental department offering ARRI, RED and Sony. You’ll get firsthand exposure to the behind the scenes world of film and photography. 


  • Safety on the set: dealing with environmental conditions, electricity, gravity and fatigue  
  • Stand basics: c-stands, arms, knuckles and bags 
  • Grippery: clamps, clamps and clamp looking things 
  • Lighting control: diffusion, reflectors, gels, flags and cutters 
  • Electrical: cables and their care, more safety tips, avoiding tripping breakers
  • When to rent, when to buy
  • Words of wisdom about working in the film/video world
  • Tour of the camera department
  • A survey of lighting options

  • Doors open at 9:45am.
  • Workshop starts promptly at 10:00am and ends at 1:00pm.
  • Classes will be held at Electric Light and Power (4748 Algiers St #100, Dallas 75207), just next door to DCP.
  • Advance registration and payment is required.
  • Maximum number of students is 25, minimum number to make a class is 10.
  • Parking is available on the street or in the lot at Electric Light & Power.

Zeroing in on the lighting realm, David has become a respected Gaffer and Key Grip on Features, Series and Commercials. Additionally, David is an operating partner in The Electric Light & Power Company, a premier equipment rental house.
